The National Association Of Chimney Sweeps guidelines are as follow:

Chimneys with solid fuel appliances – Smokeless fuel / Biomass – at least once a year.

Chimneys with wood burning appliances – Quarterly when in use.

If your appliance is only used occasionally it still needs sweeping each year.

Your insurance company may have specific requirements especially with thatched properties so you will need to check your policy

For wood burning stoves use well seasoned hard wood logs with a moisture content of between 15-18%.

Kiln dried logs from a reputable dealer will ensure this.

If you are buying it from elsewhere you can test the moisture content with a moisture meter for logs. When using a moisture meter it is important to split a log and test the middle. Obviously it is impractical to test every log so test a few random / average looking logs from your load.

There are also a variety of biomass logs / briquettes available.

For multi-fuel stoves and open fires use seasoned hardwood logs / biomass briquettes as for wood burning stoves, ready to burn smokeless fuel or anthracite.

You should check your stove manufactures fuel recommendations.

Bituminous coal has been banned for domestic use since May 2021.

Always follow the manufactures instructions for your appliance.

Do not store combustable materials next to your fire / appliance.

Install a carbon monoxide alarm in accordance with the manufactures instructions.

Insure adequate ventilation.

Ensure your flue is swept regularly by a professional chimney sweep.

Nesting birds are protected by the wildlife and countryside act. It is illegal to disturb a birds’ nest during nesting season which is regarded as March through August. It is also illegal to cap off an active nesting site during these months.

If your fire is your only source of heat you can apply for an exemption from Natural England.

I will not remove a nest illegally
